BACKGROUND Patient Accounting is one of the most difficult area in the Hospital Audit. Cash is often lost in transit even at the Cashier stage. Patient Accounting is responsible for all billing follow-up, patient customer service, and the application of payments to patient accounts. Even with a state-of-the-art system, theft and pilferage is common. Patient Accounting also acts as the liaison to all collection agencies used by the hospital. One of the way to address this issue is to have the Patient Accounting system electronically linked to the General Ledger system. However, Patient Accounting must also provide some aged AR and bad debt reporting to the AR personnel. Follow-up and collection is another prime area for abusage.
